FULL STORY: NEWCASTLE TARGET EMERY

Newcastle's new owners have identified Villarreal boss Unai Emery as a potential successor to Steve Bruce as they step up their efforts to appoint a new manager.

It is understood the former Arsenal manager sits at the top of a whittled-down shortlist of candidates for the vacancy created at St James' Park when head coach Bruce left the club by mutual consent on October 20.

Emery, sacked by the Gunners in 2019 following an 18-month stint in charge, has emerged from a pool of names touted as prospective replacements since Amanda Staveley's Saudi-backed consortium completed its takeover on Tyneside on October 7.

Eddie Howe, Roberto Martinez, Antonio Conte - who has since been appointed Tottenham boss - Paulo Fonseca and Brendan Rodgers are among those to also have been linked with the post.

The 49-year-old Spaniard, who has also managed Valencia, Sevilla and Paris St Germain, was appointed by Villarreal on a three-year deal in July last year and led the club to a seventh-place La Liga finish and Europa League glory in his first season.

'HAZARD MUST BE READY TO SEIZE OPPORTUNITY'

Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard needs to have faith and be ready to play his way back into the first team, coach Carlo Ancelotti said ahead of the team's Champions League Group D match against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Hazard, signed from Chelsea in June 2019 for 120 million euros, has been hampered by injuries and poor form in Madrid.

The Belgian scored four goals in 21 appearances in all competitions last season and has yet to find the net this campaign, with promising Brazilian youngsters Vinicius Jr, 21 and Rodrygo, 20, impressing more with each passing game.

However, Ancelotti urged Hazard to follow the example of 28-year-old forward Mariano Diaz who made his first appearance of the season in Saturday's 2-1 La Liga win over Elche and was an influential presence, setting up the first goal.

"Those who don't play need to have faith. Look at Mariano, how he finally got his chance and is enjoying himself, playing good. That's what Hazard need to do," Ancelotti told a news conference on Tuesday ahead of the clash at the Bernabeu.

MIGNOLET DEFENDS STERLING

Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has described Man City forward Raheem Sterling as an "unbelievable player".

Sterling has been struggling for regular starts in the City team of late but Mignolet, who played in the same Liverpool side as the 26-year-old early in his career, does not doubt his quality.

Mignolet said at a press conference: "When he was at Liverpool he was already an incredible player. I'm not surprised at all about his career and the way he has played, and the way he is playing. He is just an unbelievable player.

"Of course he might wish to play more regularly at the moment but with all the quality and all the competition there is for places inside this Manchester City dressing room it is always difficult to get minutes."
